д. и т. д. и т. д.

Nothing could have been worse than my journey from Petersburg to Eydtkuhnen [1]. I was travelling the same boneshaking carriage in which we travelled together last summer. It was uncomfortable and dirty, the doors did not close, the bell never stopped ringing, and to top it all the heating was out of order, and we had to sleep in a temperature of 4 or even 3 degrees!!! It was impossible to was because the pipes had frozen and the water turned to ice. Struve [2] made complaints about this terrible situation at every large station. I so skilfully avoided Struve that even though he was right next to me, he never saw me even once. In Eydtkuhnen I changed to a marvellous warm carriage. I am staying at an excellent hotel. My state of mind, both now and during the journey, is aboslutely awful; I am praising myself for not having gone to Hamburg, while at the same time tormented that I have deceived and disappointed Pollini and the Schwerin commissary [3]. In outline my route will be as follows: I go to Basel tomorrow, staying there a day or two, and then head to Montbéliard so that I can, at last, fulfil my promise to Mademoiselle Fanny. I will stay there for the day and then on to Paris, where I shall spend five or six days, until it's time to leave for Brussels. Were you to write at once then I should receive your letter in Paris, but as you have no time and I don't want to tear you away from your studies, show this letter to Kolya and ask him to write to me in detail about everything that happened after my departure, and also ask Sanya if he would write. Then send this letter right away to Modest at Klin, and let him write to Paris as well about how he's faring in my home. Where is Anatoly? I am very sorry that we missed each other. If he is in Petersburg then ask him to write to me in Paris. I think about you all constantly, and my only dream is to return to Russia. Are the frosts just as severe? How sick I am of Berlin and foreign lands in general!!!

Goodbye, golubchik, and firm hugs to you, Kolya, Volodya (if he doesn't hate writing letters too much, ask him to write to Paris too), Modya, Tolya, Sanya, Koka, etc. etc. etc.
