                         * * *
В очах огонь, в умах похмелье;

25 March

Most gracious Vasily Vasilyevich!

I'm sending you verses to replace the prohibited text of Basmanov's arioso.

Live with us! And you need not die.
Carouse, revel — come feast this day.

                         * * *
Sumptuous liquid feasts.
Fire in the eyes, a hangover in the head;
Until late at night
And with our cheerful roar!
The day just flies by,
As night's veil draws in
And voluptuous, wonderful dreams
Tired eyes close!

Naturally the previous verses were better, but what's to be done? For God's sake, reply concerning the proofreading of my romances and the awful word binge in No. 5.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
