Сейчас я сидел у M[ada]me Mayor.

Modya. I'm still here. Yesterday I received a letter from Nadezhda Filaretovna with the money and with news that on the day she wrote she would be choosing an apartment for me. She asked me to let her know by telegraph when I was leaving, so that Pachulski could come to meet me. Since the train arrives in Paris at 5 o'clock, I telegraphed that I didn't want Pachulski to rise at 4 o'clock on my account, and therefore I asked her to telegraph me the address. So here I am waiting for a telegram, which hasn't arrived. If it comes tomorrow morning then I'll leave tomorrow; if not, then I'll stay for another day. I confess that I'm glad for any sort of pretext to spend an extra day here. The closer I am to leaving, the more precious the Villa Richelieu becomes for me. I finally feel at home here now, and am beginning to regard Madame Mayor as a close relative, and Marie as a good friend. I was just sitting with Madame Mayor. Do you remember Gustave, her second son? This Gustave is now in the same position as I once found Yevstafy. He's suddenly grown up, become inexpressibly more beautiful and blossomed. Moreover, he wears a collégien uniform, which awfully suits him. Since if I'd left, I wouldn't have seen him again, and since sitting with Madame Mayor I learned that he wasn't at home, I asked her to say goodbye to him when he returns. A quarter of an hour later he appeared, and sat with me for some time. This young man is a very welcome phenomenon. A great admirer of reading and music.

Your letter is probably awaiting me in Paris. There are letters lying in wait for me poste restante. "Assomoir" at the Ambigu and "Freichutz" at the Grand Opéra are a couple of things that will alleviate my trip to Paris. However, I'm also rather glad about the prospect of meeting some pretty girl there.

The opera has grown to include a large march at the second scene of the 3rd act. The march hasn't come too badly. It will have quite a lot of noise and crashes.

Today some Mr Bashmakov came here to rent a room and sat with me for a very long time, with boring stories and conversations. Lord, how tedious almost all the people are, and how fortunate I am to see as little of them as possible. I hug you tightly.
