Italia, Napoli, Posilippo, Villa Postiglione.

We are altogether settled here in Naples. Our pension is most reminiscent of the Richelieu villa in Clarens. Just as there, we are most comfortable, spacious and at peace, and the food is just as tasty. The only difference is the price. Alas, it's twice as expensive here as at dear Madame Mayor's! It's also not good that it's painfully far from the city; a whole hour's walk to just to the city garden, where you liked to go for walks; so in the evening there's no need to think about going to the city; it's frightening to return at night along a deserted road.

Modest came here with Kolya and Grisha three days ago, and now we've already so firmly settled in that it's as if we'd been living together for several months. The weather has been foul the whole time; Vesuvius is obscured by cloud. At night the wind makes a noise like cannon shot. I hope it won't last long. I was at the poste restante today, hoping to receive a letter from you — but I didn't have anything. You've already seen Anatoly, since he became engaged. I'm very happy about this marriage, because it's clear from everything that his bride is a wonderful girl, and moreover she's not without money. That's why I think Martin is overjoyed at his master's good fortune!

I have just written an official declaration to the Directorate office, in which I request that "The Oprichnik" be excluded from next season's repertoire . This is not false modesty on my part, but rather a profound conviction that in its present form "The Oprichnik" is unworthy of the time that the Imperial stage was wasting on it. I intend to completely rework it before it is performed, and then I should be very happy and fortunate if it were to be revived.

I don't know yet, Lyonichka, whether I'll be at Anatoly's wedding: this depends on him; if this is what he wants, then of course I'll come to the wedding; but if not, then perhaps I'll wait for them here and then go to Russia. All of this has still to be decided. I hope that you received my letter with the address, but just in case I'm sending it again: Italia, Napoli, Posilippo, Villa Postiglione.
In any case I am most touched that you remembered my first opera and wanted to resurrect it.

I kiss you, my joy!
I think that by the time this letter arrives, the season will be over and you will be on your way. With all my heart I wish you good and rested summer.

I have just written an official declaration to the Directorate office, in which I request that "The Oprichnik" be excluded from next season's repertoire [1]. This is not false modesty on my part, but rather a profound conviction that in its present form "The Oprichnik" is unworthy of the time that the Imperial stage was wasting on it. I intend to completely rework it before it is performed, and then I should be very happy and fortunate if it were to be revived.

In any case I am most touched that you remembered my first opera and wanted to resurrect it.

I think that by the time this letter arrives, the season will be over and you will be on your way. With all my heart I wish you good and rested summer.

Convey my regards and greetings to your wife, and all the dear Moscow artists.

Your sincerely devoted and loving,

P. Tchaikovsky
