Naples

Tolichka, my dear fellow! We're altogether settled in Naples. The arrangement of the house we live in is very reminiscent of the Villa Richelieu: the same comfort, the same silence, but the food is somewhat worse. Then again, the view is millions of times more beautiful than in Clarens. There is one shortcoming: it's awfully far from the city, so there's no thought of going out in the evening, for example, to the theatre, etc. At least, I'm afraid of returning along a deserted road at night. Moreover, it's not altogether good that it's so expensive, i.e. exactly twice as dear as Clarens. Money generally melts like wax in the face of fire. I received your letter addressed to Rome. There's no point your lamenting Sasha's imaginary indifference towards your happiness. If you'd read what Nata wrote to me about the effect your telegram had on Sasha, you would have seen that it was completely opposite, she was almost overcome from the strength of the joyful feelings that this message brought her. Anyway, you've probably had a letter from Sasha ages ago, and the misunderstanding will have been resolved. I look forward to your decision on my fate. Both alternatives, i.e. travelling to Moscow for the wedding, or waiting for you and Parasha abroad, have their pour and contre. The second option, i.e. waiting for you here, has the shortcoming that I'll have to stay abroad longer than my means allow. Then again, it will be most enjoyable to see you already married, away from strangers, in the company of Modest. The first option is good because I can kill two birds with one stone, i.e. I'll see you down the aisle, and I'll visit Moscow, where I need to see Pyotr Ivanovich and Lyonya. If you're already of the opinion that I should wait here, but then you find it more pleasant or convenient to summon me to Moscow, then just write or even telegraph. Do you know how our young Mecks fared in Kiev? Nadezhda Filaretovna writes that Kolya is absolutely fascinated by the family in general, and by Anna in particular. Modest is in far better health, but still awfully thin and pale. I kiss and hug you as tight as possible. I kiss Parasha's hands.
