Andrey Fyodorovich! Don't be angry with me, golubchik, and for God's sake allow me to postpone our quartet gathering until next week. An awful task has befallen me. Bülow wants to play my new suite [1] on the 12th in Petersburg; It must be ready by the 5th, and I have to proofread not only the full score, but all the parts. This an awful task; I've sitting cooped up here, neither receiving nor seeing anyone. Until I finish this work I can take no pleasure in anything, and time is so precious that I can't spare a whole evening out of the few I have remaining. Write to me whether it can be postponed?[2] Please don't be angry with me.
Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

Notes and References

  1. The Suite No. 3, which was to receive its premiere under Hans von Bülow.
  2. In his reply of 29 December 1884/10 December 1885, Arends suggested delaying the chamber concert in Tchaikovsky's honour until 5/17 January 1885, although it seems that ultimately it did not take place.
