21 February/5 March

Modya! As soon as March arrives, kindly visit with Osip Ivanovich Jurgenson and ask him for 2 months of my pension. Take 100 from it for yourself (or even 200 if you are in great need), and send the rest here by telegraph. This is very simple to do, you could entrust this to Nara.

I began to write the 5th scene, not from the start, but from the point of the knock on the window and I've already finished [1]. You write in the libretto: "off-stage funeral singing" — but you haven't sent me the text [2]. Words are required, after all! For good measure this ought to be freely translated text from a funeral service. I don't need the tune of the service, just an indication; you write that you are "sending them", but in the meantime they haven't been sent. I need the words for the off-stage singing today, and will attempt to compose something myself.

P. T.

Notes and References

  1. Tchaikovsky was referring to the appearance of the countess's ghost near the start of the third act of his opera The Queen of Spades.
  2. The off-stage singing occurs at the end of the opera, following the death of its leading protagonist, Herman.
