Dear Anna Yakovlevna!
I received your letter today . At present I am categorically unable to leave the village, because I need to finish the full score of the opera in time. Every hour is precious. I humbly ask you to put my name down as godfather, if you want this nevertheless, but to christen the child without me. The fact is that I am afraid to hold newborn children in my hands, and for many years I have resolutely refused to participate in the christening ceremony. In my youth I could still overcome my nervous morbid fear of dropping a child, —  now, and for a long while, I have been obliged to decline invitations to become a godfather, especially if the child is a boy. But even without this impediment, there is no way that I could take leave of my work now.

I wish you a speedy recovery and all best wishes.

Sincerely devoted,

I'm unwell, having caught a cold (hellish weather), and so forgive my brief reply to your letter of the 1st . I know nothing about Mr Frugatta and can find out nothing here, because I don't see or know a soul here, and whenever anyone approaches me I beat a hasty retreat. Find out whether or not he's a good arranger by showing his things to Taneyev. Regarding the "Legend", I advise you to arrange it for 3 or 4 parts. Please entrust this, and anything else, to Karlusha. (How is he? For God's sake write something about him.)

The episode with the dinner in honour of Dvořák paints Safonov in an awful light . The fine young fellow! But, alas! For now it must be so. I'm looking forward to your letter tomorrow, where you promise to give news of the meeting.

I embrace you!

I forgot the most important thing: .
P. S. I did not answer the question of who arranged "Francesca" and what for:
There exist 2 arrangements for 2 pianos and 8 hands.<br/>1) "Francesca", made by Lents.<br/>2) "Manfred", made by Bryullov and Lents.
I entirely approve of the latter, but, if I am not mistaken, it has been with you a long time!
"Francesca" was done well, but required corrections.
In any case, Mr Frugatta has done what no-one else has done before, and it is very interesting to know how this came about.

I received your letter today [1]. At present I am categorically unable to leave the village, because I need to finish the full score of the opera [2] in time.

P. Tchaikovsky
