Kazan (Казань) is the capital city of the republic of Tartarstan in the Russian Federation, situated at the confluence of the Volga and Kazanka Rivers in central European Russia.

During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was the administrative centre of the Kazan district (Казанский уезд) and Kazan province (Казанский губерния) of the Russian Empire.
