Most respected Sergey Aleksandrovich!

For various reasons it's impossible for me to be home tonight and, therefore, I must deprive myself of the pleasure of spending a few hours with you. This is all the more sad for me because I'm going the day after tomorrow and consequently I'll barely have a chance to see you at my residence. Hopefully, at the very least, I'll meet you tomorrow at the concert.

Won't you find the opportunity to give my messenger the Smolensk songs? And could I take them abroad with me?

Until we meet, most kind Sergey Aleksandrovich.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
