|Original text=

|Translated text=Most respected Mariya Nikolayevna, allow me to make a request of you, concerning my brother Modest, and which requires the preliminary explanation below.

Last year my brother wrote the play "Lizaveta Nikolayevna", which is being performed successfully in Petersburg. He very much wanted this play to go on in Moscow. Mulling over the possibility of staging the play in the aforementioned city, my brother and I were hesitating about which of two foremost actresses to approach to perform the leading role. For several reasons (the principal one being that G. N. Fedotova was then seeking plays for her benefit), we approached her. G. N. Fedotova was initially carried away by the qualities of the drama and decided to accept it for her benefit, but then, disappointed with the not entirely successful conclusion of the play, she changed her mind, and consequently "Lizaveta Nikolayevna" was not put on in Moscow last year. In the spring, brother Modest was in Moscow and visited G. N. Fedotova, who promised to perform in his play this season, provided that he changed the ending — a condition which my brother promised to fulfil. Subsequently, embarking on the revision, he became convinced that he could not do better; he informed me of this and asked me to visit Glikeriya Nikolayevna, in order to tell her that he could not write a new conclusion, and to ask whether she will perform the play in its previous form. The other day I visited G. N. Fedotova, and in reply to my question asking whether she would agree to play the role of Lizaveta Nikolayevna without altering the ending, she categorically replied: "no". Meanwhile, I know how fervently my brother wants to stage his play in Moscow. And so I had the bold idea of directly and frankly approaching you with a most earnest request to afford this novice, and it seems to me, talented playwright, your assistance and complicity. In the circumstances I am somewhat embarrassed to tell you that the title role is well-suited to the nature of your talent, and that she will afford you the opportunity for a tour de force. I also know that not every artist may be approached to perform a role after another artist has turned it down. But everything I have heard about you and your character gives me encouragement and the right to hope that in any case my request will not be taken as an insult to your artistic self-esteem.
