Очень благодарю за твоё хотя и несколько мрачное, но милое письмо. В твои года ещё рано жить в прошедшем, а ты воспоминаниям придаёшь такую цену, как будто все кончилось. Не забудь, что ты только что начинаешь жить. Это банально, но справедливо. Пожалуйста, учись хорошенько и старайся выйти 9 классом, дабы не запятнать нашей столь знаменитой фамилии. ''Толя'' тебе, вероятно, давал читать моё письмо, где рассказываются кое-какие подробности о моем житье-бытье. Апухтин ночевал у меня 2 раза; каждый день со мной обедал и проводил вечера в театре или клубе, всех здесь обворожил и уехал вчера к моей великой грусти. Итальянская опера у нас началась с дебюта тенора Станио в «Отелло», имевшего большой успех. Бегичев подарил мне абонементное кресло. Дела у меня гибель. Третьего дня неожиданно получаю повестку явиться в театр. Каково было моё удивление, когда я узнал, чт6 уже перед тем было 2 хоровых репетиции моей оперы, а вчера назначена была первая считка для солистов. Я на ней присутствовал и аккомпанировал певцам. Представь себе, что Гедеонов велел приготовить оперу к 11 октября, и теперь все здесь помешались на том, чтобы желание его превосходительства исполнилось. Я крепко сомневаюсь, чтобы в один месяц можно было выучить вещь столь трудную, и заранее ужасаюсь при мысли о той беготне и возне, которую мне придётся испытать. Репетиции будут каждый день. Певцы все очень довольны оперой.

В Консерватории у меня занятия умножились. Денег буду получать несколько больше, да зато как я утомляюсь! В жизни сравнительно с прошлым годом никаких особенных перемен нет. Планы насчёт самостоятельной жизни рассеялись. Когда я заикнулся Рубинштейну насчёт того, что мне у него не совсем удобно, да и совести о пользоваться квартирой даром, он сильно обиделся и обещал устроить так, чтобы никто мне не мешал.

Обедаю на прежнем основании у Альбрехта, хотя чуть не ежедневно надуваю его.

Напрасно ты говоришь, что Ларош к тебе изменился; он говорил мне про тебя с большой любовью. Живёт он премило; он тоже абонирован с женой на итальянскую оперу. Крепко обнимаю тебя, мой милый друг, и остаюсь преданный брат,

Thank you very much for your somewhat gloomy but nice letter. At your age it's still too early to live in the past, but you value your reminiscences as if everything had come to an end. Don't forget that you're just starting to live. This is a platitude, but true. Please, study well and try to graduate from the 9th grade, so as not to tarnish our prestiguous surname. ''[[Tolya]]'' probably gave you my letter to read, which recounts some details of my daily life. [[Apukhtin]] has stayed the night at mine twice; dined with me every day, and spent the evenings at the theatre or the club, charming everyone here, and left yesterday to my great sadness. Our Italian opera began with the debut of the tenor Stanio in "Othello", which was a great success. [[Begichev]] has given me a subscription seat. My affairs are in ruins. Three days ago I unexpectedly received a summons to appear at the theatre. Imagine my surprise, when I learned that there had already been 2 choral rehearsals for my opera, and the first run-through for the soloists had been arranged. I attended it and accompanied the singers. Just imagine, [[Gedeonov]] has instructed that the opera be prepared for 11 October, and now everyone here is obsessed with fulfilling His Excellency's wish. I'm highly doubtful that it's possible to learn something so difficult in one month, and I'm already dreading the thought of the running about and fuss that I'll have to go through. My classes at the Conservatory have increased. I'll receive some more money, but I'm already exhausted! My life hasn't changed significantly compared to last year. My plans to live independently have faded. When I hinted to [[Nikolay Rubinstein|Rubinstein]] that I wasn't entirely comfortable there, and it was on my conscience that he was letting me use his apartment for free, he was very offended and undertook to arrange things so that no-one would disturb me. 

I have dinner at [[Albrecht]]'s on the same basis as before, although I'm swindling him almost every day. 

There's no grounds for you saying that [[Laroche]] is behaving differently towards you; he speaks about you to me with great affection. He's doing very nicely; he and his wife are also subscribed to the Italian Opera. I hug you tightly, my dear friend, and remain your devoted brother,
