Thursday 14 June
4.30 in the morning.

I've acquired a new routine. I wake up at precisely 4 o'clock in the morning, and then, despite being shattered, I cannot sleep. I put on a dressing gown and sit by the open window to work and to write letters. Your dispatch made me extremely happy. It was very pleasant, firstly because justice has prevailed, secondly that the rotten old man got into trouble, and thirdly that you can savour the sweet taste of vengeance. I very much hope that the case will be appearing in the newspapers. Regardless, please tell me all the details.

The heat here is unbearable, and oh, how hard it is to work! What's more, there's a plague of flies. But all the same I'm still working every day, and the full score is coming along. I have half of the 2nd act (the greater part) remaining, and after that I'll make the piano reduction of these two acts and send them both to you forthwith.

I'm looking forward with great interest to the proofs of "Yevgeny Onegin". I knew that there were minor oversights, but I didn't think there were many. It would be good if Messer's newly-discovered zeal were firm and enduring. Then you could be less bothered about the proofs.

I'm wavering between my desire to accept an invitation from Kondratyev, who is summoning me ever more forcefully, and to set off there for a week to rest and do precisely nothing, and my fear of losing 10 days of work. If I go, it will be on the 20th, but coming back on the 1st. Please, golubchik, write about what our mutual friends are intending to do over the summer. Where are Rubinstein and Hubert going? Who will be staying at Karlusha's dacha? Kashkin?

I'm very grateful to you for all the unpleasantness and annoyances that you've been putting up with because of me, receiving and talking with Antonina Ivanovna and her sister. Please forgive me. What effrontery! On the other hand, how naïve is my brother the attorney, who in response to an importunate demand for money gives an assurance that I will probably comply. Oh how horrible this all is! Until we meet. Please, do not consider it an obligation to write to me every week. If you write at least once a month then I'll be grateful for that.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
