Неаполь  2 марта 18 февр[аля]   Несчастный, многострадальный издатель! Только что получил твоё письмо с иеремиадами по поводу вечных неудач по части корректур. Действительно, какая-то злая судьба преследует тебя в этом отношении. Что касается эпизода с басовым ключом в «Да исправится», то я очень склонен думать, что это вина не моя, и не Ал[ександра] Ив[ановна] Губ[ерт], и даже не Клефеля, — а гг. гравёров, которые упорно не хотят исправлять некоторых ошибок. Мне очень помнится, что именно эту ошибку я отметил и пока ты мне не покажешь корректурного листа без моей отметки, я буду считать себя невинным. Если же, паче чаяния, действительно я виновник происшедшей и неприятности, то прошу от души извинить. Я как корректор (по крайней мере своих вещей) сделал в последние годы большие успехи, — но по природе своей рассеянной всё-таки малок этой работе пригоден. Получил я третью корректуру XVIII, XIX и т. д. концертов Бортн[янского]. Они как раз появились вовремя, чтобы совершенно отравить удовольствие пребывания в Неаполе. Считаю долгом сказать, что Ал[ександра] Ив[ановна] Губ[ерт], из всех бывших при тебе корректоров, есть если не совершенство, то всё-таки самая лучшая. Постарайся залучить ее. Женщина гораздо больше мне внушает доверия в подобных делах. Где нужно внимание, добросовестность и способность исполнять взятую на себя обязанность вовремя, — там всегда нужно стараться поручать дело женщине. Постараюсь поскорее отделаться от присланных концертов. Увертюру тоже получил и тоже постараюсь не задержать. То, что ты мне пишешь о намерении улучшить постановку «Девы», очень радует меня. При виде векселя Шеншина я пришёл в ярость. Никогда ещё генеральский чин не был носим таким мошенником, как этот сукин сын. Конечно, и я хорош. Несколько раз вносил я ему суммы на погашение капитала и процентов и ни разу не догадался, что, посылая ему деньги, я должен был поручать кому-нибудь надписывать уплаты на векселе! Спасибо, голубчик, за уплату 210 руб[лей]. Спасибо за намерение прислать мне денег, в коих до зареза нуждаюсь. Ни за Бортнянского, ни за Всенощную не могу назначить суммы. Не хочу слишком много, но и мало не хочу. Если хочешь, поговорим при свиданьи, а теперь пока пиши в счёт, но только спасай утопающего в океане расходов... Хотел написать кое-что из Неаполя, — но очень меня расстроил Шеншин, неудачи с Бортн[янским], и я не в духе. Одно скажу поистине: vedei Napoli e poi morire!. Обнимаю. Твой, П. Чайковский Napoli. Naples  2 March 18 February   My unfortunate, long-suffering publisher! I've just received your letter with the jeremiads concerning the perpetual misfortunes befalling your proofreaders. Truly, cruel fate seems to be persecuting you in this respect. As for the episode with the bass clef in "Let My Prayer Ascend", then I'm very much inclined to think that this is not my fault, nor Aleksandra Ivanovna Hubert's, nor even Klefel's — but rather that of messrs. engravers, who obstinately refuse to correct some mistakes. I well remember marking this very mistake, and until you show me the proof sheet without my mark, I shall consider myself blameless. If, against all expectations, I truly am to blame this occurrence and the disagreeableness, then I beg your heartfelt forgiveness. As a proofreader (at least, of my own things) I have made great strides in recent years — but by my dissolute nature I'm still little suited to this task. I've received the third proofs of Bortnyansky's concertos XVIII, XIX etc. They turned up just in time to completely spoil the pleasure of being in Naples. I consider it my duty to state that out of all your proofreaders Aleksandra Ivanovna Hubert, if not flawless, is still the best. Try to hang on to her. For me, a woman inspires far more confidence in such matters. Where attentiveness, conscientiousness and an ability to perform a task within a certain time are required, one should always endeavour to entrust the matter to a woman. I shall try to rid myself of the concertos you sent as soon as possible. I've also received the overture, and will try not to delay with that either. I am very pleased that you write to me about plans to facilitate the production of "The Maid". I flew into a rage at the sight of Shenshin's credit note. Never has the rank of general been borne by such a rogue as this son of a bitch. Of course, I'm a fine one too. I gave him several amounts in order to pay off the capital and interest, and not once did I realise that when I sent him money I should have told someone to record the payments on a credit note! Thank you, golubchik, for paying the 210 rubles. Thank you for the intention to send me money, of which I'm in dire need. I cannot stipulate a figure, neither for the Bortnyansky nor for the Vespers. I don't want too much, but I don't want too little either. If you want, we'll discuss this when we meet, and meanwhile put it on account, but just save me from drowning in an sea of expenses. I wanted to write something about Naples, but Shenshin and the mishaps with the Bortnyansky have greatly upset me, and I'm not in the mood.
