Dear friend!
I received your letter yesterday. Thank you for taking the trouble to travel to see the woman with my surname. Had I known that you would need to go to her yourself, then I wouldn't have bothered you with my request.

What you write to me about Fürstner is outrageous. I hope that you gave him the contemptuous and redoubtable answer he deserves.

My health is bad, and my morale even worse. I've received nothing but sad news from Petersburg: my sister is ill, her eldest daughter is ill, and, worst of all, yesterday I was informed that my father had died. He was 85 years old, and this news couldn't have been a surprise to me — but he was a wonderful, angelic old soul, whom I loved very much, and it's so wretched that I'll never see him again.

So far Bessel hasn't answered me. Meanwhile, everything is written; I've rewritten the full score with the assistance of a copyist, and the arrangement has been re-done. How much I should like all of this to end up with you! I've burned the old score, and if Bessel baulks at that then he'll receive neither the old nor the new. I'm afraid that in the event of a quarrel he might take it into his head to restore the destroyed score by means of the parts, which are the property of the Musical Society and to be found in our library. Warn Karl Karlovich not to give him the parts in the event of a request from Bessel. He never had the parts himself.

How would you advise me to proceed in this matter?

I embrace you.
