In the month of April of the present year I had the honour to inform Mr Director of the Imperial Theatres that I had then completed the draft of a three-act opera "Undina". I asked His Excellency to honour me with a decision whether this opera could be produced during the forthcoming season on the stage of the Mariinsky Theatre, and undertaking, in the event of an affirmative reply to present the full score by the 1st of October 1869. Stepan Aleksandrovich conveyed his response to this letter through Prince Nazarov, that he could neither bind himself with any positive undertakings, nor initiate the staging of an opera, as it may happen that for some reason I did not finish the orchestration by the appointed date, and then the time appropriated for rehearsals would have been wasted. However, Prince Nazarov wrote to me that if I were to deliver the the full score in September, or by November of this year at the latest, then "Undina" would be produced on the stage of the Mariinsky Theatre.

As a consequence of such positively formulated terms for the acceptance of my opera for performance, I then proceeded to orchestrate it with all possible enthusiasm, and at the present time I have completed the whole score.

I am sending herewith to Your Excellency the full score and libretto of the opera "Undina", and I have the honour to humbly request you, gracious Sir, to offer your assistance in producing the said opera, and I most respectfully declare that if my presence is required in Petersburg during rehearsals, I find myself in this respect at the complete disposal of Your Excellency.

With sincere respect and the same devotion I have the honour to be Your Excellency's most humble servant,
