Москва 3 апр[еля] Напишу тебе лишь несколько слов. Приехал сюда вчера, чтоб заниматься, и хотел провесть вчерашний и сегодняшний дни инкогнито, — но не удалось. Представь, кого я встретил, гуляя по Замоскворечью? — великого кн[язя] Конст[антина] Никол[аевича], который меня остановил и выразил изумление, почему я не был на спектакле Консерватории, состоявшемся как раз в то утро? Нечего делать! Пришлось скорее ехать отыскивать Рубинштейна, дабы предупредить его обидчивость и объясниться. Таким образом, день был потерян. Модя! Я не мог поговорить с Герм[аном] Карл[овичем], ибо он, как нарочно, уехал. Мне кажется, что тебе бы следовало ехать всё-таки в Одессу и оттуда снестись с Каменкой и разъяснить вопрос о дифтерите, который, как мне кажется, ты разрешаешь утвердительно без особых оснований. Дифтерит там всегда был и теперь есть, — но в слабых размерах. За границей тебе оставаться невозможно без Алёши, а ведь Алёше нужно будет уехать? Меня очень беспокоит твоё решение. Хочется ужасно увидеть всех вас трёх в Каменке — и поскорее! Мне придётся остаться здесь ещё с неделю. К счастью, погода стоит чудная, и это хорошо на меня действует. Но Боже мой, что за радость будет очутиться в Каменке! Я поручил в день моего отъезда Толе написать тебе. Сделал ли он это? Последние 2 дня я проводил исключительно в высоких сферах и, между прочим, провёл очаровательный вечер у Конст[антина] Конст[антиновича]. Я совершенно очарован этой необычайно симпатичной личностью. Он очень зовёт меня ехать кругом света, и я колеблюсь. Но, кажется, не хватит решимости. Целую тебя, милый мой, а также Колю и Алёшу. Последнему сообщи невесёлое известие, что братец его опять без места и шляется ежедневно ко мне. Впрочем мне довольно приятно его видеть. Твой П. Чайковский

Moscow 3 April I'm only writing you a few words. I came here yesterday to work, and wanted to spend yesterday and today incognito, but I didn't succeed. Just imagine who I met, strolling around Zamoskvorechye? The Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich, who stopped me and expressed astonishment as to why I wasn't at the Conservatory production that had taken place that very morning? There was nothing to be done! I had to quickly go and find Rubinstein in order to prevent his taking offence and explain myself. Thus, the day was lost. Modya! I couldn't talk with Herman Karlovich because, as luck would have it, he has left. I think that you ought to go to Odessa all the same, and from there communicate with Kamenka and explain the issue of diphtheria, which, as it seems to me, you have resolved positively without any particular reason. Diphtheria has always been there, and it's there now — but to a weaker extent. It's impossible for you to remain abroad without Alyosha, but will Alyosha really need to leave? I'm very worried about your decision. I awfully want to see all three of you at Kamenka — and soon! I have to remain here for another week. Fortunately, the weather is wonderful, and this has a good effect on me. But my God, what a joy it will be to find myself in Kamenka! On the day of my departure, I told Tolya to write to you. Did he? I've spent the last 2 days exclusively in high circles, and, by the way, spent a charming evening with Konstantin Konstantinovich. I am utterly charmed by this extraordinarily sympathetic personality. He's very keen to invite me to travel round the world, and I'm wavering. But it seems to me that this is unlikely to come off. I kiss you, my dear fellow, and also Kolya and Alyosha. Tell the latter the unhappy news that his brother is again without a position, and he loiters around me every day.
