In the month of April of the present year I had the honour to inform your Excellency that I had written the draft of a 3-act opera "''[[Undina]]''". I then asked if I might hope to see my opera produced on the stage at the Mariinsky Theatre during the course of the forthcoming season.

Your Excellency, via the mediation of Prince Nazarov, honoured me with the decision that if my opera was to be completely ready by 1st September, or no later than November at the latest, it would be put on the Mariinsky stage.

Encouraged by this undertaking, and furthermore, as the singer Menshikova told me, you had indicated my opera would be given for her benefit, I set aside all my other work and diligently set about the instrumentation. In July the opera was ready, and at the beginning of August, via the Moscow office of the theatre directorate, I submitted the full score, piano reduction and libretto to Mr ''Head of Repertoire''.

Two more months have now passed, and not only have I been given no information about when my opera will be given and rehearsals are to begin, but I do not even know whether the score was received, and where it is to be found!

I have read in the newspapers that several new operas are being prepared for production, and that consideration will only be given to my opera if there is sufficient time available. From these newspaper reports I must draw the regrettable conclusion that my opera has still not been seriously discussed, and that its appearance on the stage is doubtful. This is extremely unpleasant for me, because, having abandoned all other activities, I worked diligently all summer, relying entirely on Your Excellency's undertaking, and happily imagining the realization of my long-cherished dream of hearing my opera in [[Petersburg]].

Be that as it may, I still have not lost hope, and I am convinced that only some sorts of insurmountable obstacles, unknown to me, must have compelled the directorate to revoke its original decision. In any case, I have the honour to humbly ask Your Excellency to notify me of to what extent I can still hope that my opera will be given, and also, if it is in the repertoire, to notify me of approximately when it is to be given.

I ask Your Excellency to pardon my impertinence and to accept the assurance of my profound respect, with which I have the honour to be Your Excellency's most obedient servant,
