Olichka, golubushka! Just imagine that tonight I remembered about the five rubles I owe and burned with shame! Write me a few words when you set off, and I'll probably go out to meet you. How is your health, and that of my golubchik Georges and old man Nikolay? Please scribble me a couple of words.

I am savouring my way of life and am utterly enamoured with Frolovskoye. I kiss your hands, and hug Nikolasha and Georges.

Imprisoned indeed, because the weather has been so awful that I didn't even leave the house, but confined myself to strolling around the rooms. The school is established in such a way that Novichikha and I must each pay for half of its upkeep, but since Novichikha will undoubtedly not pay anything, because her affairs are in the most awful state, then obviously I alone will pay. Golubushka Panichka!!

Since I wrote to Tolya last week, I've been sitting imprisoned in Maydanovo. Imprisoned indeed, because the weather has been so awful that I didn't even leave the house, but confined myself to strolling around the rooms. The wind howled mercilessly, making the shutters rattle so much that if my parlour hadn't been next to the hall, muffling the noise, my nerves would simply have given out. Yet today is such a wonderful day that after a magnificent stroll I am completely reconciled to my sweet cosy corner again. All this time I've been working with the greatest of energy, and I'm now already finishing the 2nd act of the opera. I even worked rather too hard, as a result of which my nerves began to play up, and last night I felt awful. Tomorrow I'm going to Moscow for a few days; I'll be going to the Musical Society concert, Rubinstein's 4th concert, a meeting of the Directorate, etc.

On Monday 20th, the school established on my initiative opened. For the time being it's situated in the gatehouse, by the church. There were 28 boys and girls present. I was at the opening, and today I spent the whole morning in classes. The teaching methods of the priest and the deacon are rather peculiar, but they conduct them very diligently and with love. The school is established in such a way that Novichikha and I must each pay for half of its upkeep, but since Novichikha will undoubtedly not pay anything, because her affairs are in the most awful state, then obviously I alone will pay. Anyway, don't worry — this only costs 220 silver rubles.

On the same day (20th) I went to the station in the morning to meet my brother Kolya. The reason for the meeting is that he's considering whether to buy my horses. Oh, Panichka, how I want to sell them. Firstly, I have absolutely no need of them. Secondly, I see to my horror that, perhaps due to poor care, their condition is only becoming worse and worse. Both of them are covered with some sort of curly hair, they have no shine whatsoever, and they're starting to resemble cab horses. Meanwhile they are being fed properly. I don't know what this means. Nikolay Ilyich has promised to give me a decision on the 10th.

The Kondratyevs have rented a large dacha (our former one), and will be living there as a family. Emma is thrilled. What a wonderful piece of embroidery she made me — it beggars belief. Cousin Annette has nearly finished stitching the curtains; Olga Sergeyevna is sewing me a magnificent tablecloth. Only lazy Panya isn't sewing anything for me.

Panichka. I'm intending to leave for Tiflis around 12 March; write to me if there is any risk at this time year along the Georgian Military Road.

I kiss your hands.

I kiss the Prosecutor and his daughter, and bow to Kolya, Nanny, Stepan and Mitya.
