Door was a student of Karl Czerny and began his concert career in 1850, touring Italy and Germany. In Stockholm he was appointed pianist to the Swedish royal court, before becoming professor of piano studies at the Moscow Conservatory from 1866 to 1869, where he taught alongside Tchaikovsky. In 1869, he returned to his homeland as a professor at the Vienna Conservatory, where he remained until 1901.

In 1868, Tchaikovsky dedicated his piano piece Valse-Caprice, Op. 4, to Anton Door.

You ask what romances I have for orchestra.

1) "Was I Not a Little Blade of Grass". Lavrovskaya had the score, but at my request she sent it to a singer in Paris, and it seems to have been lost; but it can be reconstructed from the parts.

2) "Legend" was done for Usatov. It's to be found with him, and he's in Tiflis.

That's all. As for making selections for others to orchestrate — I have nothing to say. Let Sergey Ivanovich choose himself, if you really want this. I don't want this in the least. A romance is written for piano accompaniment, and there's no need whatsoever for an orchestra.

I require children's instruments (from the Haydn and Romberg's symphonies) because I want to use them in my future ballet. Please, send them to Frolovskoye immediately. And also the music the performers use to play these children's instruments.

I'm going home the day after tomorrow.

I embrace you.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

I'll be in Moscow for the end of Shrovetide.
