Anya, golubushka! Post is taking up so much of my time that I'm obliged to limit my correspondence, so far as possible; therefore forgive me for only writing in brief. What has happened to you? Why have you been unwell for so long? I find this most unsatisfactory. It's not in the natural order of things; ladies such as yourself, i.e. of your sort (well, you know, as Modya and I have come to define it) ought never to be ill. On my part, I'd also say that that I'm unwell almost the whole time; but why is this? We have terrible colds all the time. I'm content with my surroundings, although the house is far from being so agreeable and convenient as Maydanovo. I'm working quite hard , as far as my almost constant malaise permits. Modest and Kolya stayed with me for two days and left directly for Pyatigorsk, from where Modya wrote me an exuberant letter . In July or August I want to visit Piter and, of course, I'll visit you on the way in Pavlovsk, where we can go to the music together. Keep well, golubushka; please forgive me for writing so little. Bow to Pyotr Ivanovich and Lybova Petrovna.

Frolovskoye village 14/26 June 1888 Anya, golubushka! Post is taking up so much of my time that I'm obliged to limit my correspondence, so far as possible; therefore forgive me for only writing in brief. What has happened to you? Why have you been unwell for so long?[1] I find this most unsatisfactory. I'm working quite hard [2], as far as my almost constant malaise permits. Modest and Kolya stayed with me for two days and left directly for Pyatigorsk, from where Modya wrote me an exuberant letter [3]. By now they will already be in Tiflis, or even in Borzhom. In July or August I want to visit Piter and, of course, I'll visit you on the way in Pavlovsk, where we can go to the music together. Keep well, golubushka; please forgive me for writing so little. Bow to Pyotr Ivanovich and Lybova Petrovna. Yours, Your screen is the best ornament in my residence [4]. |
