Soden (Nassau) neben Francfurt am Main, Kurhaus, Herrn P. Tschaikovsky.

My dear Papochka!

It's been a week and a half since I left you, but it seems like it was only yesterday, since the time has passed so quickly.

As anticipated, I travelled to Paris without stopping [1]; travelling is rather tiresome, no matter how comfortable the railways are generally, when it comes to being confined to a carriage for 3 days and nights without a break, then one's nerves eventually start to fray from all the whistles, bells, the opening and closing of doors, etc.

Needless to say, my meeting with Volodya was very nice. I found him in better health than I'd expected; however, I have to admit that he is extremely poorly, and in need of very serious treatment.

We stayed in Paris for around 4 days; of course I spent the time pleasantly, as the city and its resources are well known to me. If one sets aside false patriotism, it is impossible not to conclude that in terms of comfort and convenience, that is, the whole material situation, our capital remains far behind those of western Europe, and especially Paris. We would do well to live like a rich man, but in Paris people of even the most limited means can enjoy all the pleasures of life.

This is already our 4th day in Soden [2]. It's quite a nice little place, lying at the foot of a rather wide chain of mountains, called the Taunus. The people here are numerous, but really very ordinary, not like in Baden, Wiesbaden, etc. Volodya has already begun to drink the waters; perhaps, as I anticipate, they will cure him; they are said to be beneficial for the nerves.

We will stay here for 5 weeks and then set off for Switzerland.

You are still on your own, my dear Papochka, and probably a little bored! What is dear Dumpling doing? [3] I would be delighted if you were to write to me. The address: Soden (Nassau) neben Francfurt am Main, Kurhaus, Herrn P. Tschaikovsky.

I kiss you and Lizaveta Mikhaylovna hard. Volodya bows sharply to you.

P. Tchaikovsky
