Каменка 20 сент[ября] Друг мой! Ты знаешь, что французский композитор Делиб писал балеты. Так как балеты вещь, не имеющая прочного существования, то он из них делал для исполнения в концертах сюиты. На днях я вспомнил о своём «Лебедином озере», и мне очень захотелось сохранить от забвения эту музыку, в которой есть несколько порядочных вещей. И вот я решился, подобно Делибу, сделать из него 'сюиту'. Для этой цели мне нужны клавираусцуг балета и партитура. Не знаю, имеешь ли ты у себя партитуру; если нет и если достать её из театра трудно, — то пришли покамест одно переложение, а я впоследствии в точности укажу тебе, какие нумера и в каком последовании следует их переписать. А затем, если ты этого хочешь, эту сюиту можно издать в виде партитуры и переложения в 4 руки. Напиши, что ты об этом думаешь? Получил начало первой корректуры «Всенощной» и, вероятно, на этой неделе успею просмотреть и прислать тебе. Позволь затруднить тебя одним поручением. В книжном магазине «Нового времени» принимается подписка на «Историю Петра Великого» Брикнера, выходящую выпусками. Мне очень хочется приобресть эту вещь; нужно заплатить с пересылкой, кажется, 14 руб[лей] сер[ебром]. Первые 4 выпуска вышли, и я желаю их получить сейчас же. Получать желаю выпусками, а не частями (подписчикам предоставлено выбирать то и другое). Прости, что надоедаю поручениями. Я начал инструментовку оперы. Обнимаю тебя. П. Чайковский

Kamenka 20 September My friend! You know that the French composer Delibes has written ballets. Since ballets are not things with a permanent existence, then he's made concert suites to be performed from them. The other day I remembered my "Swan Lake" and wanted very much to preserve this music, which contains a few decent things, from oblivion. And so I have decided, like Delibes, to make a 'suite' from it. To this end, I require the piano reduction and the full score. I don't know whether you have the score; if not, and it's problematic to acquire it from the theatre, then just send the arrangement alone for the time being, and I'll inform you afterwards exactly which numbers and the sequence in which they should be printed. And then, if you wish it, this suite could be published in the form of the full score and an arrangement for 4 hands. Write what you think about this? I've received the first part of the proofs of the "Vespers", and I'll probably have time to check and send them to you this week. Permit me to task you with one further errand. The "New Time" bookstore is now taking subscriptions to Brückner's "The Story of Peter the Great", which is coming out in instalments. I would very much like to have this; it has to be paid for with postage, apparently, of 14 silver rubles. The first 4 issues are already out, and I should like to receive them forthwith. I want to receive them in issues, not in parts (subscribers are given a choice of one or the other). Forgive me for pestering you with errands. I've begun the instrumentation of the opera.
