Dear friend! I beg you to send me 300 rubles. I wanted to last out until Moscow and start milking you there, but it so happens that I need to milk you from here too. I should like to squeeze you for everything I can, i.e. everything that is due to me according to the accounts, and I forewarn you that I'll be merciless to you in Moscow. Therefore, prepare yourself to withstand a fresh blow from the wicked fate that has put you in my path and condemned you to be milked dry.

The copy of the trio you sent me gave me the greatest pleasure. I don't think that any of my creations have ever been published so finely. The title pages utterly captivated me with their elegant simplicity.

When this trio was due to be performed on Sunday, I can honestly say that I was secretly on tenterhooks all that evening and the next day, expecting some sort of telegram from you or someone else. Alas, in vain! From this I conclude that the trio didn't make a particularly prominent impression on Moscow's musical horizon. This is a little unpleasant for me.

You ask when I'll be in Moscow. I'm sure it will be in the near future, and I'll stay with either you or Tolya. It would be more convenient at yours, because Tolya doesn't seem to have a quiet corner where I can sit by myself, or if the need arises, to work. But if he decides that he wants me there, then it won't be possible to refuse.

So far as the changes and transpositions of numbers from "The Maid of Orleans" are concerned, we'll need to discuss the details in person.

I'm glad that you're pleased with your home, but my God, how much it cost!

It's so embarrassing that you write me such long and wonderful letters, while I'm just briefly scribbling to you!

I kiss you.

P. Tchaikovsky
