Dear friend!

The Grand Duchess Yekaterina Mikhaylovna wants to organise a most brilliant performance of the cantata, with an enormous chorus, with Lavrovskaya etc., and naturally she should not wish for anything to detract from the interest in the novelty of her undertaking. She has my every sympathy, because I know in advance that hers will be a better performance than at the Musical Society, where the chorus is foul and there are few rehearsals. Therefore, I should very much like the cantata not to be performed in Petersburg prior to her performance, and I ask you to make every effort to facilitate this.

As for "Mazepa", I have calmed down: my angry reaction was all about my not wanting Raab; all the other reasons why I wanted to postpone the Petersburg production of the opera are not important. In reply to my letter, Nápravník gave his assurance that Sionitskaya, or some other debutante, will give a good performance in the part of Mariya. I've sent off the official distribution of roles, and the opera is being put on.

I hope to send you the three movements with the arrangements next week, but I suggest you take the first from Hubertikha for engraving; then she will do the arrangement. There still remains the final movement, which will be ready in the middle of October, provided nothing intervenes.

I'm enjoying the peace of the countryside, while contemplating the future tribulations in both capitals.

Keep well. My belated congratulations to Sofya Ivanovna on her name day.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
