Dear Gubertsha! I've instructed Pyotr Ivanovich to pay you 50 rubles for the arrangement [1]. Then I ask you to do the first proofs (arrangements of all the movements), and also the second, and for this allow me to offer you another 50 rubles. Do you agree? And then there are the royalty fees, besides which I kiss your hands with gratitude for your help in arranging the suite: were it not for the haste, then I would have asked you to do the remaining 4 movements — but, alas, I had to turn myself inside out so that everything was ready as soon as possible and, of course, I did much worse than you would have done. I had no wish to change your work, because I have complete faith in you and your Tonichka [2]. Thank you, golubshka!

P. Tchaikovsky

Now I'll be seeing you soon. Why did you call me flippant?

Notes and References

  1. Aleksandra Hubert had arranged the first movement of Tchaikovsky's Suite No. 2, Op. 53, for piano 4 hands; the composer himself arranged the other four movements.
  2. "Tonichka" was Nikolay Hubert, Aleksandra's husband.
