Киев 17 окт[абря] Карлуша! Анатолий пишет мне, что хотят исполнить мою первую симфонию. Я этого очень желал, ибо, несмотря на все огромные её недостатки, питаю к ней слабость, ибо это грех милой юности. Но, взяв партитуры в руки, я ужаснулся огромному количеству безобразных опечаток и вообще тому виду, в коем она напечатана. Принялся было за основательную корректуру, — но времени нет сделать это как следует, ибо боюсь, что если задержу, — то, пожалуй, ты уж распорядишься о переписке голосов. Кстати о голосах: печатных нет, а старые писанные не годятся, ибо лет 10 тому назад я симфонию переделывал. Первые две части я просмотрел довольно обстоятельно, остальные две лишь поверхностно. Посылаю тебе эту партитуру отдельно заказным письмом. Если найдут невозможным исполнять симфонию, столь обезображенную, то я нисколько не обижусь. Обнимаю тебя. Времени, когда буду в Москве, назначить не могу; это зависит от оперы, но во всяком случае во 2-й половине ноября буду. Всем поклоны. П. Чайковский |
Kiev 17 October Karlusha! Anatoly writes to me that they want to perform my First Symphony [2]. I wanted this very much, since, despite all its huge shortcomings, I still nourish a weakness for it, because it was a sin of my sweet youth. But, after picking up the score, I was horrified by the huge number of disgraceful printing errors and, in general, by the whole appearance of the score as it was published at the time. I wanted to set about correcting it thoroughly — but there isn't enough time to do this properly, because I'm afraid that if I delay in sending it, you might arrange for the parts to be copied out anyway. By the way, speaking of the parts: there aren't any printed parts and the handwritten ones are no use, because about ten years ago I revised the symphony. I've gone over the first two movements quite thoroughly, but the remaining two only superficially. I'm sending you this score separately by registered letter. If it's found to be impossible to perform the symphony, because it's been mutilated so much, then I won't be in the least offended. I hug you. I can't say exactly when I shall come to Moscow — this depends on the opera [3], but in any case I shall be there during the second half of November. Bows to everyone. P. Tchaikovsky |

- ↑ The planned performance of the Symphony No. 1 (the first in its revised version of 1874) would take place at a Russian Musical Society concert in Moscow on 19 November/1 December 1883, conducted by Max Erdmannsdörfer. Tchaikovsky returned specially to Moscow in order to attend this performance.
- ↑ Tchaikovsky was conducting negotiations with the Imperial Theatres' Directorate to have his new opera Mazepa staged at the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre.
