Most respected Pavel Mikhaylovich!

Before replying in the affirmative to your invitation, I want to speak with Altani. Would it be wise for an author having two operas running in this theatre to appear in the role of a judge? Does Kashperov want me to be a member of the committee deciding the fate of his opera, does he recognise me to be sufficiently impartial, won't my presence be unpleasant for him, will the decision about staging the opera be taken by secret ballot or by openly expressed opinion — I should like to clarify all this before replying to you.

I may very well see Altani at today's concert, and be able to discuss it with him. My heartfelt thanks to you for your wish to satisfy my desire regarding "Mazepa".

Sincerely devoted and grateful,

P. Tchaikovsky
