10 бут[ылок] красного;
2 бут[ылки] хорошего красного портвейна;
2 бутылки финшампань или лучшего коньяку;

Do you know that I've only now had the opportunity to think about the business of "Manfred", the fee and Mackar? I sat down to answer him and decided. This is the matter. "Manfred", even if it is a work of genius, is a symphony of a sort that, due to its exceptional complexity and difficulty, might be played only once in ten years; therefore, it cannot be profitable either for you or Mackar. On the other hand, I value it very highly, but how can the value of such a thing be determined financially? I may be mistaken, but it seems to me that this is my best work; I spent so much on it in effort and pains that a few hundred rubles seem to me insufficient and incapable of rewarding my labour. Had you been very wealthy, perhaps I might have unceremoniously stipulated a very large sum, on the basis that you will recoup your expenditure on something else — but the fact of the matter is that you are not wealthy. And as for Mackar, then speaking frankly, I am touched by the sacrifices that he is prepared to make for me now, when I can state with confidence that he won't make much from my works in France. Having just taken 20 thousand from him, you can't be demanding in your relations with him, especially when you know in advance that there's no profit to be made from "Manfred".

In short, I have decided not to take anything from either you or Mackar; I've written to him about this, and consider it my duty to warn you so that you don't demand the promised thousand francs from him. Thereafter it's up to you to charge whatever's due for printing copies of "Manfred" for him.

Please, golubchik, do not be confused about the appetisers and wine for the 26th; I'm writing this to you again. I need:

10 bottles of red;
2 bottles of the finest red port;
2 bottles of fine champagne or the best cognac;
3 pounds of cheese, 3 pounds of pressed caviar, a tin of shrimp, a tin of red salmon (Atlantic or Pacific, I don't know which is the finer).

That, I think, is everything.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
