Finally, we're dealing with a good lawyer. He summoned Modest today and told him that not only had he reviewed all the relevant case law, but he had also visited the Society of Authors, found out who Michele is, thoroughly studied the conventions, and he completely understands what it is you need to know. On Tuesday 29th (our style) he will send a note on headed paper, signed and stamped, which (i.e. the note) I'll send to you forthwith. The essence of what he told Modest is that you are in no way subject to a criminal court, that, the prescriptive period might even serve you as a means to obviate any responsibility, but otherwise then you will be obliged to pay, and rather a lot: a fine of three times the entire proceeds raised from sales, and all remaining copies will need to be returned. That ought to be the penalty for the French if they were prosecuted here by the Russians for infringement of Russian property. And according to Russian law, as you know yourself, if your head doesn't know it then your nose will sniff it out.

I've sent my writings to Osip Ivanovich today by express. Act 3 of the opera has been arranged, but without writing out the solo and choral voices. I've started on the 2nd act.

I embrace you.
