Вчера он телеграфировал мне следующее: Supplie venir, votre arrive peut me ressusciter.

Poste restante.

Dear friend!

As a consequence of a telegram I received yesterday from Kondratyev in Aachen [1], I'm going to Odessa with the next steamboat from Batum, and from there to Dresden and Aachen. By some miracle, the dying Kondratyev somehow drove to Aachen, whose waters, it is thought, might prolong his pitiful existence for several months. Yesterday he telegraphed me the following: Supplie venir, votre arrive peut me ressusciter [2]. It is impossible not to go; I'm abandoning my treatment and leaving. As a consequence of this unexpected turn of events, I require more money, and therefore I will be borrowing 500 rubles from Anatoly, and I will write to Pavel Ivanovich [3] so that he might reimburse Anatoly here. Accordingly, I've already borrowed from here (besides the 500 rubles, which I'm awaiting from hour to hour) 1000 rubles, and it may very well be that I turn to you before the end of the summer, even though I promised you in my last letter that you wouldn't be burdened by any further requests for money. Please forgive me, golubchik!

God knows how long I'll be staying in Aachen. Given favourable circumstances (i.e. if someone were to take my place with the patient) or in the event of his death I could even be in Russian for August. Otherwise it will be no earlier than September.

Rahter has arranged an invitation for me to the Philharmonic Society in Hamburg next January, to come and conduct my works. I've accepted. Unfortunately I can't understand all his German gibberish [4], but there's no-one here to translate it.

Write to me in Aachen. Poste restante. I hug you.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
