Mozartiana
Suite
4 Stücke con W. A. Mozart
(4 Morceaux de W. А. Mozart)
instrumentirt
(instrumentés)
von
(par)
Р. Тschaikovsky

Dear friend!

Today I'm sending you the Mozart suite [1] by registered post. It should be entitled thus:

Mozartiana
Suite
4 Stücke con W. A. Mozart
(4 Morceaux de W. А. Mozart)
instrumentirt
(instrumentés)
von
(par)
Р. Тschaikovsky

Since in the course of instrumentation I have supplemented some harmonic details, and made slight alterations, then I consider it highly possible for the suite to be published in the form of a 4-handed arrangement. In which case you could assign it to A. I. Hubert, and if speed is desirable, to Langer. Whoever it is ought to be constantly attentive to the enhancements I've made to Mozart's original. However, if you consider this unnecessary and inconvenient, it's not essential [2]. Three of the items included in the suite are adapted from the piano (Nos. 1, 2, 4) and one (No. 3) is from an orchestral arrangement of the chorus Ave verum [3]. Naturally, I would hope for it to be performed next season [4]. That's all.

I won't go on much about myself, because there's nothing much good about it. Nikolay Dmitryevich's condition is still grave, but in general there is an improvement and hope for a recovery. He is improbably weak, and thin to the point that you wouldn't recognise him. He's being treated with baths, mercury, iodine and many other things. He is continually alternating between utter despair and collapse, and the most rose-tinted hopefulness, and God knows how long this rigmarole will go on for. But, I repeat, there is hope, and Aachen alone can save him, because the basis of his illness is syphilis. What wouldn't I give to leave. But this remains impossible because when the question arises Nikolay Dmitryevich won't hear a single word hinting at my departure.

I'm addressing you in Moscow, because I think you will already have returned. Whatever happens, it's essential for me to be in Petersburg for early September. God knows when I'll make it to Moscow! If you were to write me something, it would give me enormous pleasure. I'm unrelentingly homesick, and detest Aachen from the depths of my soul.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky

Notes and References

  1. The Suite No. 4 in G major, Op. 61, entitled "Mozartiana", consists of arrangements of four short pieces by Mozart.
  2. In November 1887, Jurgenson issued an arrangement of the suite for piano duet (4 hands) made by Eduard Langer.
  3. The four movements are: (1) Gigue, arranged from Mozart's Eine kleine Gigue for keyboard (KV 574); (2) Menuet, arranged from Mozart's Minuet for keyboard (KV 355/567b); (3) Pregheira, arranged from Franz Liszt's piece À la Chapelle Sixtine, S.461 (1862), which itself was a solo piano transcription of Mozart's motet Ave verum corpus, originally written for voices, strings and organ, K.618 (1791); (4) Thème et variations, arranged from Mozart's Variations on the theme "Unser dummel Pöbel meint" " (from Gluck's opera La Rencontre imprévue, written in 1764) for keyboard, K.455 (1784).
  4. Tchaikovsky himself would conduct the first performance of his Suite No. 4, which took place on 14/26 November 1887 at a Russian Musical Society concert in Moscow.
