25 сент[ября] Майданово Дорогой друг! Манускрипт «Чародейки» не был свободен, когда я приступал к купюрам и переменам (с него списывались голоса для Тифлиса), и я поневоле должен был написать все изменения на копии. Ошибок в этой копии множество; если и в Вашем экземпляре их так же много, то я воображаю как Вы меня проклинали и будете проклинать на корректурных пробах. Утешаю себя единственно тем, что Вам не я первый раз «корректировать» имея под рукой лишь копию с массой ошибок. Теперь манускрипт освободился, и во вторник я привезу его. При свидании я расскажу Вам, почему мне невозможно было приехать к 26-му. Но, впрочем, ведь я именно просил Вас корректурные пробы сделать без меня!!! 25 September Maydanovo Dear friend! The manuscript of "The Enchantress" was unavailable, when I embarked on the cuts and alterations (the parts were written out from it for Tiflis), and I was reluctantly obliged to write all the changes into a copy. This copy has may mistakes; if there are as many in your copy as well, then I imagine you have cursed me, and will be cursing when doing the proofs. My sole consolation is that this is not the first time you have done "proofing" with only a copy to hand with masses of mistakes. Now the manuscript is available, and I'm bringing it on Tuesday. When we meet I'll tell you why it was impossible for me to come on the 26th. Anyway, this was the reason I respectfully asked you to do the proofs without me!!!
