Tchaikovsky was referring to the 16th Châtelet concert in Paris on 21 February/4 March 1888, at which he conducted his Serenade for String Orchestra, the Andante cantabile and Nocturne (soloist Anatoly Brandukov), the Concert Fantasia (soloist Louis Diémer) and the Theme and Variations from his Suite No. 3.
