At the end of August in Petersburg a competition will take place for the position of kapellmeister of the (Russian) dramatic company. One of the candidates will be a certain Mr Suk , whom I know very well. Besides me, he also knows Nápravník a little, but the latter has not had occasion to see him conduct; I have had the opportunity to see operas (in Kharkov), performed under his direction, whereby I was positively astonished by his talent as a kapellmeister. I say this without any exaggeration; since then many years have passed, he has grown in experience, and now it seems he has the chance to achieve his long-standing ambition — to succeed in the capital. It is said that besides genuine merit a recommendation is required. If this is so, then I recommend Mr Suk most emphatically, and can safely vouch that you will be wholly satisfied with your Aleksandrinsky kapellmeister, if this position falls to Suk .

Most kind Ivan Aleksandrovich! Render him your most formidable patronage. However, I am confident that at the competition he will demonstrate the best of his abilities.

Your sincerely devoted and deeply respectful,
P. Tchaikovsky
P. S. I can imagine how many puns will be made concerning Suk's children if he becomes kapellmeister .
