I received your letter today [1] and it is with sadness that I learn from it about your illness. I hope that, as a person of a nervous disposition, you have exaggerated its effects on you, but whether it is serious as you believe or not, then still you have suffered and are suffering. I am all the more touched by your heroic determination to establish yourself in the dramatic arena. I am eagerly anticipating your new work and will give it my immediate attention. If your setting of this scenario is even half as good as the one I know, then the play will indeed turn out to be something extraordinary [2].

Forgive me for not having written for so long. So much work is accumulating, with such a short period in which I must do everything that is required, that I involuntarily had to abandon my correspondence altogether for a time. But for all that, the main thing is done: my symphony [3] is ready, and I think that I have not miscalculated, that it has turned out well. In general I am pleased with myself, but I cannot help complaining about my health. I've been constantly unwell all summer, and while orchestrating the symphony I had no alternative but to muster all my strength in order to work, and to exert myself to the full. Now, although I still have much to do, I am obliged to allow myself a little rest and for this purpose I'm going to the country for a few days, to my sister in Kiev province, where I have a long-standing invitation. I shall write from there, dear Yuliya Petrovna, and, please, keep well. I am convinced that you shall triumph over your illness. Once again I beg your forgiveness for not having written for so long. My regards to Sofiya Mikhaylovna [4] and the children.
