Gracious friend!

Herewith is a short, but complete list for you of errata in the full score of "Romeo":

That is all. These errors infuriate me, not only because of their number, but because of their importance.

I shall certainly write the romances, but do not rush me. I am again beginning to think about a new large-scale composition which, since I finished the piano reduction of the opera, has taken over all my thoughts. The romances will be written, assuredly, during the winter.

I petitioned all I could about Merten; I met with Kavelin and spoke with Savitsky. It seems that for the time being the status quo shall remain, and as to the kapellmeister's place, Kavelin said "We shall see".

Regarding the uproar about "The Oprichnik" I tell you that I will not be writing anything for the petty tyrant Nikolsky, but for the charming Krutikova I should be prepared to write every day; there's nothing I can do to enhance Basmanov's part, and I really cannot see where such an addition could be made effectively. When you find the opportunity to enquire about such changes to the allocation of roles, let me know, and I shall write immediately to Nápravník, otherwise I will not make a step. I shall be in Petersburg for Christmas, when we can discuss everything. I have received a letter from Berger, who reports that my new opera shall open his new theatre, with Lavrovskaya as Morozova.

A final request. Procure for me one copy of the 2-hand arrangement of "The Oprichnik" and send it to my father, who wants to present it to a poor lady. Keep well.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
