Most respected Nikolay Matveyevich!

Allow me to thank you with all my heart for the consideration you have shown by sending me a subscription to receive the "Nouvelliste" [1]. May I take this opportunity to congratulate you on the forthcoming New Year and to wish you every happiness and success.

Your truly devoted,

P. Tchaikovsky

Notes and References

  1. The Saint Petersburg musical journal Nouvelliste (Нyвеллист) had been founded by Nikolay Bernard's father Matvey in 1840, and Tchaikovsky's subscription was a gift to mark the fiftieth year of its publication. However, as the editors of the Soviet collected edition of the composer's correspondence rather laconically noted: "No copies of the journal have survived in Tchaikovsky's library" — П. И. Чайковский. Полное собрание сочинений, том XV-А (1976), p. 13, note 1.
