Dear friend!
I'm finally in Maydanovo. I'm all the happier from your letter to see that I can live here for a further 2 weeks. And I'm eager to work!

While you were in Piter, I sent Kamenskaya the originals of two romances; then I received the prints of all 12, but I forgot to send them to replace the originals. Sorry! I'm now sending Osip Ivanovich the prints of these two romances, with a request to send them to Kamenskaya and to retrieve the manuscripts from her. I'll send you the proofs of the romances all at once, when I've reviewed the eight that you're sending me now. I was summoned to Petersburg by the Empress's secretary Oom, who explained that for formalities' sake he needed me to give him a print of all the romances and the prospective title page, and that he would do the inscription on this prospective page. Anyway, everything he told me face to face was also explained in writing in a letter sent to Maydanovo, which was waiting for me here. So that you know what the matter is, I'm sending his letter just in case, for you to return to me. Along with the (bound) prints of all the romances, send me an example of a dedication to the Empress because I don't know how to write it. I suppose the romances' title page should be rather plain, i.e. 12 Romances and Songs composed by P. T. Op. such-and-such. From your letter I saw that there has been some sort of confusion with the proofs of the romances, or at least with the manuscripts. Take note that in Petersburg you gave me the proofs of a several romances, of which 5 also came with the manuscripts. Two of these manuscripts are now with Kamenskaya, and three with me: making five in total. Why did you write that Aleksandra Ivanovna still has 8??? After receiving what you're now sending me, I'll unravel this muddle. Meanwhile, I've only proofread 2 of the romances, namely those that Kamenskaya has. In short, the romances cannot be printed until I send you all 12 together with my markings, and even then it's necessary that Aleksandra Ivanovna should check that all my markings have been corrected. Well, that's enough about romances.

I'm now working diligently to finish the 1st act of the opera, both in full score and the arrangement. After finishing this, I'll give it to you for copying, and you can immediately start engraving the piano reduction. I'll do the rest of the acts in piano reduction first, and I'll be chasing you terribly to do the engraving, because I promised to hand over the complete printed piano reduction by Lent. And this is essential if we want the opera to go on at the start of the next season.

The Directorate of the Imperial Theatres in Petersburg have commissioned me to do the music for a ballet next season: "Undina". I'll set about it as soon as I finish the opera.

I should warn you that over the course of the next two months I will be taking a lot of money from you, namely two thousand rubles. I ask you to start by issuing five hundred rubles to Aleksandra Ivanovna Hubert. If you wish, I'll explain to you what this payment is when we meet. She (i.e. Batasha, not the payment) won't be coming to you today, but tomorrow. As for my performance fees, I leave it to you to dispose of them as you please, i.e. whether to take everything from both capitals all together at the end of the season, or twice, i.e. before Christmas and during Lent. Although if you have the funds, I should prefer that you take all the fees together from both theatres by post, because this is more convenient for calculations. In any case, then you will only have to trouble dear Osip Ivanovich twice, if not once.

During rehearsals for the opera I'll be staying in Moscow for quite a while, and since there will be no shortage of artists coming to go through their parts, and in order to work I will require an instrument, then unfortunately it won't be convenient for me to stay with you. I'll ensconce myself in some large room at the Moscow Hotel or at the Korkorevskaya, and ask you to hire an instrument for these 2 or 3 weeks. Please, don't be angry that you have a room for me, but I won't be using it. But finding myself in a state of constant agitation, it's essential for me to be completely at home, which, no matter how close I am to you and your family, is impossible when staying in a family home.

Don't say this to anyone for the time being, but I'm not coming to the concert on Saturday, because this will cost me several days, and my time is terribly precious. On Saturday I'll write to Max that I'm not entirely well, and that he shouldn't grumble at me, as per Arma Zenkra. Indeed, after the commotion of Petersburg the fact is that I need to rest and relax in the seclusion of the countryside.

I should be very glad if you came to visit me on Sunday. You could come to dinner and leave in the evening. This is why I haven't invited anyone for Saturday, because in the event of an overnight stay for one or more guests, the whole of Sunday morning will be lost. Otherwise I would have had Kashkin and Karlusha along. A few drinks would have been nice!!!

I embrace you.
