Most respected Fyodor Ivanovich!

I've written to Jurgenson [1] to send you a copy of the chorus for male voices, which I wrote last year and has yet to be performed anywhere (words by Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich) [2]. Besides this, I shall endeavour to write a chorus for mixed voices no later than next week and hand it you personally (because I shall be in Petersburg next week), or through the concertmaster Davydov [3].

Please accept this assurance of my true respect,

P. Tchaikovsky

Notes and References

  1. This letter to Pyotr Jurgenson has not survived.
  2. The chorus Blessed is He Who Smiles (TH 83).
  3. Becker's letter of 8/20 January 1889 asked Tchaikovsky to write two secular choruses for a forthcoming concert by the choir of the Saint Petersburg Imperial Theatres. The new composition for mixed voices was The Nightingale, and would have its first performance at Becker's concert on 19/31 March 1889. For unknown reasons Blessed is He Who Smiles was not premiered at the same concert.
