Письмо твоё я получил в Петербурге и буквально не мог ответить, — до того все время было занято. Да и здесь суета порядочная, и ты прости, что я отвечу не очень обстоятельно. Вместо Никишая думаю пригласить Клиндворта (специально для Wagner Abend'а). Пойми, Саша, что нам непременно нужны имена и разнообразие. Мне кажется, что Клиндворт возбудит теперь в Москве большой интерес. Одно лишнее имя для объявления о будущих концертах очень ценно, и вот почему сейчас после твоего письма я всё-таки пригласил Клиндворта на замену Никиша. Но слушай, милый Саша! Я тебе даю честное слово, что ты будешь всё-таки два раза дирижировать. Это даже для нас очень важно в видах будущего, чтобы ты по возможности со всех сторон выказал себя как дирижёр. Направник умоляет тебя играть его фортепьянный концерт в том концерте, в коем он будет дирижировать. Он мечтает об этом, как о величайшем для него счастии. Голубчик, посмотри этот концерт и, если ты согласишься, напиши слова Направнику. Я очень бы желал, чтобы ты обещал ему это! В случае же если ты не захочешь, дай мне знать, я тогда велю Сапельникову зубрить концерт. Голубчик! Я не мог теперь исполнить обещание послать часть долга П. М. Т[ретьякову]. В начале поста петербургский Юргенсон получит мои деньги из театра и вышлет. Обнимаю тебя! Милую Веру поцелуй лишний раз за меня. Завтра еду в Кёльн. Твой П. Чайковский |

I received your letter in Petersburg and could literally not reply — it was so busy the whole time. Indeed, there's a fair amount of commotion here, and you'll forgive me if I don't answer in great detail. Instead of Nikisch, I'm thinking of inviting Klindworth (specially for the Wagner Abend). You must understand, Sasha, that we certainly need names and variety. It seems to me that Klindworth will arouse great interest in Moscow now. One extra name to be announced at future concerts is very valuable, and that's why just after your letter I invited Klindworth to replace Nikisch all the same. But listen, dear Sasha! I give you my word of honour that you will still conduct on two occasions. This is very important for us looking to the future, so that you can show every possible aspect of yourself as a conductor. Nápravník is begging you to play his piano concerto at the concert that he's going to be conducting. He dreams of how magnificent this would be for him. Golubchik, look through this concerto and, if you agree, write a few words to Nápravník. I should like it very much if you could promise him this! In the event that you don't want to, let me know, and then I'll have Sapelnikov learn the concerto. Golubchik! I couldn't fulfil my promise to send part of the debt to P. M. Tretyakov.
