I am sorry but I can only come to Hamburg this season for a concert on 1st March; if possible please allow me to conduct the symphony on 1 March; I can be in Hamburg early on the 28th [1].

Notes and References

  1. Tchaikovsky had received a late invitation to conduct his Symphony No. 5 at a Philharmonic Society concert in Hamburg on 3/15 March, which would clash with his prior conducting engagement in Geneva. However, after sending the above telegram (which survives only in draft form), the composer was able to postpone his second Geneva concert, and make his way to Hamburg instead.
