Please, advise me how to answer Antonina Ivanovna? I'm sending you her letter. This bears an uncanny resemblance to Pushkin's story about the fisherman and the fish. A year ago I doubled her pension; now she asks for it to be doubled again! In fact, if just to be rid of her, I'm rather inclined to grant her request; but who can guarantee that in a year's time she won't ask for 400 rubles? A woman so stupid and unimportant, capable of sending several children to an orphanage without the least concern for them, doesn't deserve the slightest sympathy, and I don't believe that she is in need, because she can live decently on a hundred rubles. On the other hand, the more I know that I've made her happy, the better and more content I am. After all, there are moments when I feel sorry for this fool. Why should she be to blame for being stupid, pitiful, and devoid of all pride, of all decency? In short, there are many pros and cons to granting her request. Be so good as to have her come in and talk to her. Can she have 150 rubles in the meantime? Or should I tell her that, having only 3000 rubles a year (she doesn't know about the rest, and besides, God knows there is some truth in this), I cannot afford give her 4/5 of my pension, if I become incapable of work or any other business. But rather from time to time, with a good income, I shall give her as much as possible in excess of 1200 rubles a year. In short, permit me to abuse your friendship once again and ask you to resolve this matter. I consider it quite possible to give her 200 rubles now in the form of encouragement.

I arrived here yesterday thoroughly unwell, and I'm not going out anywhere today. My mood is foul; I'm terribly homesick. I won't be leaving Russia next year.

I embrace you!

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

In the capacity of an author whose works Erdmannsdörfer has often performed and, moreover, some excellently ("Manfred"), I should like to give him 100 rubles for a baton.
