The Imperial Russian Musical Society in [[Moscow]] proposes to invite you to appear at one of their concerts, namely to perform your own ''Piano Concerto'', and also to conduct some of your own works. Unfortunately the Society cannot offer you a large fee. Specifically, they can only pay 600 rubles (approximately 1200 Marks, according to present rates) for your participation. Dear, respected friend!

The Imperial Russian Musical Society in Moscow proposes to invite you to appear at one of their concerts, namely to perform your own Piano Concerto, and also to conduct some of your own works. Unfortunately the Society cannot offer you a large fee. Specifically, they can only pay 600 rubles (approximately 1200 Marks, according to present rates) for your participation. This surely is not enough, but it is hoped that you will do the Society the honour of promising to make your most valuable contribution. We should be very happy to see and hear you in Moscow! If you are able to accept this proposal, then it would be best if you could participate in the concert on 28 November [1].

I urge you to send me an answer right away! How are you, dear friend? I have written a new symphony [2] and also a "Hamlet Overture" (which has not yet been orchestrated). This overture is dedicated to you. I hope that you are in good health!

Give my best regards to your dear wife!

It is so difficult for me to write in German; there is much I should like to tell you — but I cannot.

Until we meet, my dear, good, most esteemed friend!
