I have received your letter, most respected Adele (forgive me, I do not know your patronymic???) and am hastening to answer it briefly.

You greatly exaggerate my importance and influence upon the Directorate of the Imperial Theatres. In the sphere of music I am, of course, endowed with some authority, and my recommendations have some weight. But in financial matters I cannot have any influence. However, I shall write to Altani that I consider the amount offered to you to be much too incompatible with your worth.

On the other hand, permit me to advise you not to be too demanding the first time, and not to miss the chance to make it into the Imperial Theatre. The first year can be served on a small salary. Then later, having achieved success and made a true name for yourself, you need not be reticent and could demand tens of thousands. Bear in mind that until you have affirmed your artistic reputation and shown in practice that you constitute a valuable asset, it is necessary to acquiesce, so far as possible, to the terms offered to you by the directorate, principally so that you do not miss the boat.

I am in a hurry and, perhaps, not expressing myself clearly, but I hope that in my words you will see only a reflection of my sincere desire for your benefit, and at the same time a wish to see you on the Moscow stage.

I shall write to Altani now.

Sincerely devoted,

P. Tchaikovsky
