10 июля Душечка Баташа!
Как досадно, что Вы меня не застали. Я встал сегодня утром в самом невероятно мрачном расположении духа, и свидание с Вами было бы для меня истинным благодеянием. Спасибо Вам за все Ваши благодеяния по отношению к бедному музикусу. Ваш П. Чайковский Пожалуйста, напишите, как было свидание с M[ada]me Мацилевич и какова она? Ещё просьба. Скажите В. И. Сафонову, что в случае, если в[еликий] к[нязь] К[онстантин] Н[иколаевич] скончается, ему вместе со мной следует там быть. Убедите его принести ещё эту жертву для блага Муз[ыкального] об[щества]. Вероятно, тотчас после похорон будет решаться в Главной дирекции, кому быть нашим президентом, и думаю, что присутствие директора консерватории имеет большое значение. Спасибо Вам ещё, дорогая Баташечка! |

How unfortunate that you didn't catch me. I rose this morning in the most incredibly gloomy frame of mind, and meeting with you would have been a godsend for me. Thank you for all your good deeds on behalf of impoverished musicians [1]. Yours P. Tchaikovsky Please write about how your meeting went with Madame Matsilevich? Another request. Tell V. I. Safonov that in the event that Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich passes [2], he and I must be there. Convince him to make this sacrifice for the good of the Musical Society. The General Directorate will probably decide who will be our president immediately after the funeral, and I think that the presence of the director of the conservatory will be of great importance. - ↑ Aleksandra Hubert had been attempting to secure an apartment for Tchaikovsky on Great Georgian Street in Moscow, owned by a certain Madame Matsilevich.
- ↑ The Grand Duke, who was gravely ill, had been the president of the Russian Musical Society since 1873. However, Tchaikovsky's immediate concerns were unwarranted, since the Grand Duke survived until January 1892. His widow, the Grand Duchess Aleksandra Iosifovna (1830-1911), ultimately succeeded her husband as the president of the society.
