Your Imperial Highness!

I fear that I answered too hastily and presumptuously in the affirmative to your flattering suggestion to contribute to the publication of the "Academic Dictionary". I should be very pleased to oblige you in any way — but I ask myelf, am I sufficiently competent in terms of musical scholarship. And I am embarrassed to answer this question: "yes". Of course, I am a musician by nature, by craft, even with a knowledge of technique. But I am little-versed in the history of music. Of course, in one instance or another I can turn to Laroche or Taneyev for assistance — but, in any case, I must caution Your Highness that there are musicians far more worthy than I to be contributors to the Academy. Besides these two names, I can also mention Messrs Kashkin, Sacchetti, and Chechott (in Kiev)). The most suitable among them in this instance would be, without a doubt, H. A. Laroche — but, unfortunately, he is so indolent, so slow, that I dare not recommend him in my place. Be that as it may, permit me to thank Your Highness for the honour that you did me by inviting me to participate in the compilation of the dictionary. Of course I do not refuse this honur, and am very, very flattered by it, but I merely consider it my duty to caution that I am not entirely worthy of it, and that there are specialists in the sphere of musical scholarship from whom I am as far removed as a distant star in the heavens.

I am terribly sorry that I did not manage to discuss the Dictionary with you in detail in Petersburg; but I will be spending several days in the capital around 20 January, and let me hope that then I may have the good fortune to see Your Highness.

In one week, I shall be on my way to Frolovskoye.

May I ask you to convey to Her Highness my congratulations and all my best wishes, having the honour to be Your Imperial Highness's most humble servant.
