Your Imperial Highness!

The famous Parisian kapellmeister E. Colonne, who is going to Petersburg to conduct three concerts, has asked me to provide him with letters of recommendation, and in particular to persons of the highest rank.

Since, amongst the high-ranking persons interested in music, I have the good fortune to be personally acquainted only with you, I decided to provide Colonne with a letter of recommendation to you, and he will probably appear before Your Highness. For God's sake, forgive my boldness. I reasoned that if Colonne comes to you at such an hour when you are at home, then perhaps it will not be particularly difficult to give him 2 minutes of conversation — and for him this will be a priceless honour and afford him great happiness.

During the past winter, owing to unfavourable circumstances, I seldom had the opportunity of seeing Your Highness and the Grand Duchess, and this saddens me very much. There are often many things I want to talk to you about! At the present time I am in Paris, where I am to conduct a grand concert on 5 April/24 March, and after this I have been invited to conduct a concert that is to take place on 5th May/23 April in New York, on the occasion of the opening of the new Music Hall festival.

I hope to return to Russia in the middle of June.

I humbly ask Your Imperial Highness to convey my respectful greetings to the Grand Duchess.

Your deeply respectful.

P. Tchaikovsky
