Rouen
30 March/11 April

I've fled here for a few days away from the hustle and bustle of Paris; I want to try to do at least a little work, otherwise I might not have time to fulfil my commitments. I won't write anything about the concert, because hopefully you'll find out from the newspapers. I was so tired from all my experiences in Paris that I vowed never again to take such torment upon myself voluntarily. I should have been delighted to turn down New York — but I cannot; I've already received the advance. Sapelnikov, Menter and Modest are coming here next Thursday; they will escort me to Le Havre, where on Friday evening I'll be embarking on the steamer, leaving Le Havre at 5 o'clock in the morning.

In answer to your questions: 1) You have the parts for "Hamlet", surely. The last time I performed "Hamlet" was in December 1889 at Belyayev's; I brought the parts and gave them to you together with the corrected score.

2) You ask why I had the parts for "Legend" printed in Hamburg. I haven't published them anywhere, but just 2 months ago I sent off the score of "Legend" (for chorus) with the German text added to it. Rahter printed the parts at his own behest, and I don't understand why he bothered me with the proofreading. Ah, my dear chap, how I regret previously agreeing to print my things before they were performed. My 3rd suite is, in my opinion, the most grateful of all my orchestral things abroad. Still, it's essential that it's altered and published in the form in which I perform it, as necessary, i.e. with various cuts and alterations to the orchestration. How long must I wait for the opportunity to correct and make the 2nd edition??? This is awfully desirable. It was published flawlessly, but I myself have made many terrible mistakes in it. The second concerto is also impossible in its present form. I recall that you intended reprinting it, but I don't know the situation in this instance. It contains many of my biggest blunders, but there are a myriad of errors in the parts, and no rehearsal letters; in short, it's a disgrace. I endured many agonies during the rehearsals for this concerto. But then I'm glad that the new edition of the Slavonic March is rather good. So much the better. When I feel that I've grown old, and am written out, I'll start correcting all my old things; and since I've accumulated a great deal in my life, there will be enough work to last me a long while, at least up to the age of 90.

My address in New York is thus: Hotel Normandie, Broadway, 38th Street, USA, New York. Rouen is interesting; I'm fed up and homesick, but glad to be resting.

I embrace you,

P. Tchaikovsky
