Je viens de rentrer à Moscou d'une courte excursion en Suisse où je suis allé pour des affaires de famille, et je trouve ici Votre bonne lettre du 13 Janvier où Vous m'annoncez encore un succès {{sic|americain|américain}} que je Vous dois. Recevez, cher protecteur de ma muse, mes {{sic|remérciements|remerciements}} les plus chaleureux et l'expression de la joie que je ressens en considérant le pas énorme que la propagation de ma musique a fait grâce à Votre protection.<br />

N'est ce pas étrange à penser qu'entre les deux plus célèbres artistes de notre époque, c'est en Vous qui ne me connaissez que depuis peu et non en Antoine Rubinstein, qui cependant a été mon maître, que ma musique a trouvé un appui si nécessaire et si bienfaisant? Ce Dieu olympien n'a jamais témoigné vis à vis de mes compositions, qu'un souverain mépris et je Vous dirai sous le sceau de la confession que j'en ai toujours été profondément blessé. Laissez moi, à propos du quatuor dont Vous m'annoncez le succès, V[ou]s conter un petit détail qui va Vous faire comprendre combien est grand ce {{sic|mepris|mépris}}.
